In Response To: Factors for Tournament Attendance (2) (Bill Riles)

I agree Bill and largely with Phil earlier post regarding level play. I don't agree that ABT points from Adv and Open should be separate...don't they already take into account number of entrants and level of play?! I would very much like to the the ABT adopt some 'firmer guidelines' as to level of play. Maybe that should be in a separate thread. However, back to the original point of this thread. We just held the CO ABT and our numbers were down--general economy or something else? Lynda and I are discussing this very issue. Stick brought up both clocks and side-events. We only had 6 clocks, so they were limited to 'by request of both parties' or 'at the discretion of the TD to speed up a lagging match'. AFAIK, none were used. My thoughts were that as long as we're playing in a single room, that it would be unfair to otherwise clock say all of the doubles events and/or all of the open events, due to noise or other distractions. Regarding side events, our doubles, blitz and 2pt-quickies were way down this year. In fact, we got 'dinged' for thinking we could fill a 16-draw this year (I think we got 11), when last year we had both a full 16 and an 'over-flow' 8 (which Norm and I won). We're in discussions with Phil regarding having him add a lecture and his infamous 'Kill Phil' knock-outs for next year. Any thoughts as to whether this might increase interest? I would like to expand our club to more of a teaching club to get newbies interested in the game and generally elevating the skill level. I found it very interesting that the Grand Rapids club specifically set this as one of their purposes. Whether you attended or not, we'd like to hear what you liked or didn't like and why you came or didn't come to our CO event that we may make it even better next year. Is it food or the lack thereof? Is it schedule and the keeping thereof? Fees--too big or too small? Hope to see you in Peoria. Cheers, Lynn
