Cube position

A starting point is to realize that if White closes out two of Black's checkers, with spares on 6-5-4, and Black has borne off 13 checkers, then White's double is on the take/drop borderline.
How does the current position compare to that reference position? In the worst case, you could get three checkers sent back, with only 10 checkers borne off, which would be a whole lot worse. But, you're not at that point yet. Although White has a double shot, the second checker hasn't been sent back yet. Even if it does get sent back, White has only a four-point board so far, and you could anchor and/or escape. Unless White is an expert, White will likely make many errors trying to contain you, while your game plan is fairly simple—keep trying to get your checkers around, keeping your opponents' shots down to a minimum. If you have the opportunity to get one checker around safely, then that's usually better than trying to advance both checkers simultaneously.
I think this is a take even against an expert, and certainly against a non-expert.
