I DO NOT KNOW the details of what happened with the WSOB or why, and from talking to people it is clear there have been some problems and mistakes. But here is what I do know:
WE NEED TO CUT PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO PROMOTE THE GAME SOME SLACK. Especially when they run into problems or have problems, even if they might have made some stupid mistakes themselves along the way, when shit happens, everyone is so eager to jump on them and criticize. How many people are willing, instead, to offer help and support?
Yes, tournament directors are trying to make some money for themselves along the way....we should hope they are very successful or we won't have any tournaments. But for the most part, there is not a lot of money to be made even if things go well, and if the players aren't understanding and helpful and patient and supportive, we will chase these pioneers who invest their time, money and effort to bring us venues to compete out of the game.
I have run tournaments of different kinds in different sports and games (and in backgammon) and IT IS A THANKLESS JOB where you get all kinds of stupid complaints and ridiculous crap from all kinds of rude and ungrateful jerks, and in the end, there is very little reward compared to what you could be making in a "normal" occupation. Most do it for the love of the game as well as some income they might gather along the way.
Unless you are willing to show them how you can set up and run a tournament better, and do it yourself, then at least be supportive and understand when they run into problems to make it easier for them to try to fix the problems or get it better in the future. Don't jump on some bandwagon to try to keep other players away from their events which will only add to the problems and help ensure that you won't see them, or others, attempt to bring us more tournaments and venues in the future.
