I do this sometimes. I didn't realize people found it objectionable. I do it when I'm coming off the bar, the hit is mandatory, and I'm trying to ascertain whether I want my checker to remain on the spot vacated by the opponent's checker or to keep the checker moving. I guess I don't see too much wrong with doing this.
