I listen to music once in awhile. Not often, but once in awhile, and I make it a point to always have my ipod with me. If someone is being obnoxious, there is a chouette behind me, or for whatever reason I need a change of ambiance, I start listening so I can focus on the match better.

Seen headphones at chess tournaments many times (and this was ~10 years ago). Claiming that someone could be listening to Magriel or an MET is a joke. If someone tells me not to use headphones I'll tell him to get bent.
