Is music allowed while playing?

In answer to which is it, my answer is both. The more specific rulings we have that cover the typical questions that arise, the more all tournaments are applying the same rules; the more the players know what is acceptable and what is not acceptable; and the less conflict and arguments we are likely the have. The more the rules are specified, the easier it is for the tournament director to enforce rules and not be considered to be arbitrary or unreasonable.
At the same time, the tournament director should have the right to overturn rules in situations that are unusual or where they do not apply. Matt thinks he should be able to drink coffee. If his opponent is allergic to coffee and the smell nauseates him, I think it would be a reasonable request not to drink it, and the tournament director should agree.
Many think head phones are fine. But if a player sings along, and it bothers your opponent, I believe the tournament director should be able to step in.
As a tournament director and player, I want to know what is expected of me and to what standards I can hold my opponents. I don't want rulings to be left primarily to the whims of the tournament director (I have seen too many bad rulings and rulings that are different from tournament to tournament.) But I do agree that the tournament director's word must be final and I will abide by it if and when he believes there is an extenuating or unusual situation or something not covered specifically in the rules.
