In Response To: Much Discussed Peoria Occurrence -- OTB (Bill Riles)

The thing is, Bill, that I did NOT disagree with your redouble... You posed the question to me and I believe I said redouble in a 2 roll position... and then the discussion ensued.

Later in the weekend, you were winning several matches and making it to the finals. You described to me a redouble you gave Phil Simborg leading 6-0/11. Right?

Without seeing the position I questioned the premise of that sort of double. Along those lines, I reminded you of the Sean rewhip.

Losing to Sean really BUGGED you, especially since you had done the "right thing".

So, before the finals, with the background information available to me... I said you have a tendency to double/redouble early. I am qualified to make that statement and I am qualified to assess Sean's game, which is "optimistic" as I am sure most posters here will agree.

I knew you were up against a tough opponent in David Rubin in the finals. I thought you would have a better chance with him if I warned you about a habit that I have noticed of yours... On Sunday it just turned out to be David's day, because he jumped out to a lead. The rest is history.

By bringing up the Sean Garber cube, and MUCH DISCUSSING it, I was giving you a look into your opponents perspective... and to argue against redoubling in such positions if the bad beat is going to bother you VERY much more than the slight satisfaction you will get when the redouble with a lead works out.

I have found that I hate the bad beats so much I tend to avoid them, and I don't care if I give the other guy a free roll. IF he gets lucky in that situation he will feel CHEATED out of his "rightfuls".

Guess what happens then???

He doulbes TWICE as early next game to prevent the same thing from happening. Whom do you think benefits the MOST from that?

I think the alert reader will see that the gains of waiting can easily outweigh the benefits of doubling someone in for the MATCH. Food for thought, at least...

By the way... You had a GREAT tournament, again, Bill. You are getting better all the time!
