I'm missing the point you are trying to make.

2-ply says no-double, 4-ply says double/take. Did Blue double, did White take? Did either player make an error in this spot? And how did this error (or not) make the total match error rate a BFD?

Just because 2-ply isn't always right doesn't make it meaningless. However, when I have a match I really want to know the error rate, I roll out every error and cube decision.
