In my opinion, the best point system would give the same number of points for each win in the main in any sanctioned event, as well as a lesser number of points for every win in the consolation. Then, I believe there should be bonus points for getting to the semis, finals, and winning, and those bonus points should be based to some extent on the number of participants in the event. An event twice as large as another event should not award twice as many points, but certainly "more" points. The reason it is worth more is that with more entrants, it is logical to assume that the competition was probably tougher and it was probably more of an accomplishment to advance. Of course, if it is a bigger tournament, the player would have had to win one, two, or even three extra matches to advance.
Now, tournaments with a Swiss or Modified Swiss need to be adjusted. There should still be points for every win, but because the player has more matches even if he loses, it should not be as many points.
I also believe the points should accumulate year after year, just like bridge, so that players can achieve certain milestones and be recognized for them. And those milestones apply to both the Open and Intermediate divisions so that both can receive awards and recognition.
