If you is sure the position is a pass, but unsure whether it's TG or not, just play on.

This is good. I'd add that if you are (almost) certain that after then next exchange it will still be a big pass (and you have non-trivial gammon chances), that's a good reason to play on.

Always remember that your decision to play on is for the NEXT roll only. You have to decide again after every exchange.

The dice may hurt you such that on the next roll you have a double/pass or even a double/take, but that is no disaster. You are only really unhappy when on the next roll you have no-double.
