Peoria Oddity

"Malcolm Davis, who has won more tournaments around the world than even he can probably remember, lost his first three matches in the Championship Division in Peoria -- without scoring a point !! He said he was confident he had at least tied a record -- and that the record would never be broken. "
As I learned many years ago in my days of competitive Racquetball, just when you thought rock bottom was well understood, a new way to dig is discovered.
Games were played to 15 points and there is far less volatility and luck than in backgammon as there were many skill divisions and therefore not huge skill differences between the players in a particular division. Scores like 15-0 and 15-1 were sufficiently rare and sufficiently embarassing that they earned the special names of "doughnut" and "twinkie". Nothing could be worse than being doughnuted at a major tournament. So I thought. Until I wound up being the referee for a match in which a player lost by a score of 15-(-1) on "center court" with everyone watching. Not only did the player get his ass handed to him, but he managed to make such an ass of himself so as to earn himself a penalty point from the referee (me) in the process. New depths of low are always possible. The future has not been written yet.
