42P-55P-64
Black opened with 42 and White responded with 55. Black should play 13/9 13/7, bringing two checkers down from the midpoint, attempting to form a prime.
Black trails by 14 pips before the play and by 4 pips afterward. In the early game, when trailing in the race after the play, it is often correct to keep the 24pt anchor, even if it means exposing one or more blots on your side of the board.
Running (24/14) and splitting (24/18 13/9) both expose Black to many attacking numbers while White has ten checkers in the zone. Two down (13/9 13/7) leaves 17 shots, but getting hit is far from fatal - Black will usually get return shots.
If Black is missed after playing two down, he has a great chance to prime White.
Even more surprising to a lot of players are 31P-55P-65 and 42P-55P-65. In both positions, Black should play 13/8 13/7 instead of 24/13.
In 53P-55P-64, making the 2pt is better than two down. Owning the 3pt instead of the 4pt, Black has less chance of forming a prime and a smaller racing deficit, so he should make a safter play.
