In Response To: Time to stir the cauldron again... Appeals committee (Daniel Murphy)

Rob - Note that I'm not saying that every time a director makes a ruling that they should be required to call a committee when asked.

Daniel - Oh my ... another ambigious rule. I agree that not all rulings can be appealed. But which and why?

take that one statement by itself and of course it makes little sense. you have to include the rest of that paragraph. there is a difference between situations which are covered specifically by a rule and those that require interpretation of the rules or of the actual sequence of events that led to the problem. My previous point was that if you have already ruled what should occur when a specific event or sequence of events takes place, there should be no recourse to a committee which may or may not agree with that decision.

is there something unclear about that?

The reason the originally ruling or interpretation was given was that clocks are relatively new at bg tournaments in the US, and there were several (I couldn't guess at the number, other than hearing that it had occurred on multiple occasions in different parts of the country) occasions where folks were auto punching after a sequence of closed out turns. If you agree with Patrick, you are of the opinion that losing your turn here is not in the spirit of the game and/or you don't want people to have bad feelings about or quit playing because of clocks that they are unfamiliar with. So, he made that ruling, prior to the beginning of play, of what should happen when that occurs. It was not an unprecedented action, and I feel quite strongly that the guy responsible for the event has that right.
