I would like to see this rule clarified once and for all.
My opinion as I've already stated is that you cannot pass your turn in backgammon and so punching the clock without rolling is simply invalid not illegal. How does one make an illegal play without a dice roll? It is clear to me at least that the player who has not rolled his dice when required must be required to do so.
What happens without a clock when the player opens his board and the sleeping opponent fails to roll? The player says "hey wake up and roll your dice".
