I studied a couple of similar positions recently and found that the benefits of putting the checker on the bar and making a fourth point are quite significant. For a start, large doubles are automatically blocked. Also, the four-point board gives Blue more time to get his act together and build the structure he wants, both right now, and perhaps later, if White partially escapes but gets hit by Blue again.

In addition, in this position, White's other blot is significant. If Blue plays 8/2* 4/2 and White rolls 35 from the bar, hitting, then Blue gets a shot at a second White checker, so White really has no immediate jokers. If he gets the chance, Blue might even want to slot some of his vacant homeboard points in order to force White to hit as White comes in, giving Blue a chance to pick up the second checker.

For comparison, here's a money-game position where one has to choose between pointing and priming, and pointing comes out ahead. It's not exactly parallel to the original position but I think it's still a useful point of reference.
