In Response To: Time to stir the cauldron again... Appeals committee (Daniel Murphy)

I hate to say this, but it looks like we are in agreement. If we were having a discussion in a bar, instead of long-distance in writing, we would have discovered this very soon. Of course, increasing overall popularity of backgammon and participation in tournaments should be a very high priority. But that doesn't mean that having good rules shouldn't also be a high priority...one does not rule out the other.

Having small differences in the rules from country to country, or even tournament to tournament is not a major problem...but having one place interpret the Crawford Rule differently from another is not, IN MY OPINION, productive and it could lead to misunderstandings and arguments (as it has) which take away from the enjoyment of the game.

As for dealing with the WBA (which is not a ruling body) or the ABT (which is not a ruling body)...you and I make the same point differently....until there is an international "ruling body" for backgammon, we have to deal with the various group and tournament directors and federations and get input from all and try to get agreements on the rules. Bringing all interested parties into the discussion, regardless of "who authorized them to exist" is helpful.

As to Koca's arguments that many players don't care what the rules are in other countries, I agree. But even those players will be affected if there are misunderstandings, ambiguity, and arguments about what the rules are at the tournaments they do play at. Some of those problems occur because our rules need work.
