Over the board I used the Ward count and dropped. The Keith count looks like a useful tool to learn; thanks to all for the pointer. Of course it doesn't quite work in this position, but no simple formula is going to be perfect.

I wonder, though, whether it's possible to develop a separate formula for short races—say, less than 35 pips—that's more accurate than either the Ward count or the Keith count. If the cube is getting turned in a short race, there's a decent chance that it's a re-cube or a re-re-cube, so it may be worth some extra effort to try to get it right.
