OK. I like a Whopper as much as the next guy. And if it comes with melted cheese food so much the better.

Hitting seems essential since you are behind in the race, you have the opponent outboarded and have two men back to his one. You would like simply to hit and pick up your dice, but your opponent will want you to play an ace. You realize your 22-point anchor is suboptimal--you really don't want to hang out there for long. So you strive for a better anchor by playing 22-21. You are not too scared about getting hit twice since your opponent has a sullied virgin board (no points and a blot).
