"Which I'm sure you know but "rules" always strike me as dogmatic. Except when they're not. "

I think that is the difference between a rule and a concept.

Of course understanding a position is what is important and blindly following rules is a recipe for trouble - I am the last person that would ever suggest that. But it helps to be level set as to what should be your default impulse under the circumstances and then have to convince yourself to do otherwise.

If I'm leading 2-away 4-away with a centered cube, I know that generally speaking I'm not thinking about doubling unless there are minimal gammons and contact is about to be broken. Yes, there may be exceptions, but it is a rule/concept that if followed will be correct the vast majority of the time.

I have another rule of thumb that says: 1. It is always wrong to run off your only advanced anchor and leave a blot behind if you're not doing it to hit. 2. When it seems like it is an exception, see #1. Yes, of course there are times to break the rule, but after getting zinged with errors time after time by breaking the rule when it seemed "this time is different", I know I'd better think long and hard before concluding that it is ever an exception. As a result, I've become much better and getting it right.
