Outside one box, inside another

If backgammon theory is currently static, it is certainly not because the ideas have been exhausted. The limiting factor is incentive. There is not a lot of incentive for people to push the bots further. A few people are, of course, pushing the current bots further, but they are doing so despite the limited incentive.

Even without any radical new ideas, the current bots could be strengthened in various ways. An obvious one is to train different nets for different match scores. Has anyone made a serious effort to do this yet? If not, then the only reason I can see for not trying it is lack of incentive. (Skeptics might doubt that training nets for different match scores will improve the playing strength much. But we can't know that until we try it.)
