Phil, your logic applies fine in the current situation, where the rule is not so widely known. But if the rule does become standard, then it won't just be the experts like MCG who learn that it makes a difference to look ahead an extra move. Then the same people who are currently creating too much downtime by thinking about saving the gammon will again create downtime by thinking about how to save the gammon in the presence of the new rule.

I'm not necessarily complaining about rule changes per se. What I'm cautioning against is introducing ad hoc rules that appear to reduce downtime in the short run, but that in the long run serve only to complicate the game and do not actually reduce downtime. It's easy for inexperienced game designers to make this mistake.
