Time to stir the cauldron again... Appeals committee

I respectfully disagree with the statement "Offloading the decision to those who have no responsibility for any outfall of the ruling just does not sit well with me." Because they are an offical, appointed committee, they have complete responsibility for the outfall of the ruling.
If they uphold your ruling, that is only very helpful to you and to the players on many levels. And if they should over-turn your ruling, the responsibility for the ruling is shifted to the committee. No one can blame you if someone gets upset or doesn't like their decision.
Most of the time a committee will not be called, and the few times they are called, they will usually rule with the director. The important thing is this:
1. Aren't players entitled to expect tournament directors to live by the rules, if tournament directors expect us to?
2. Isn't know that there is a right to appeal something that allows people to feel more comfortable about the rules process?
3. Don't you think it is possible that you might make a mistake? I promise you, other directors have. Even Judges and juries decisions can be appealed....mistakes happen. Just how "horrible" would it be if one of your decisions was overturned? Live with it. We all have to go through life not getting everything we want.
Again, appeals will almost never happen; most of the time if they do, it will not change your decision; yes, it could hold up the game a little; yes, it could cause a ruling you don't agree with. NONE OF THESE ITEMS ARE AS IMPORTANT AS SETTING A PRECEDENT THAT TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS BELIEVE THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO LIVE BY THE ACCEPTED RULES OF THE ABT, even though you expect players to live by them when they enter your tournament.
It's just not worth it. What other rules might you arbitrarily decide to suspend? What if you call a rule on me and I say, "Sorry, I choose not to follow that rule because I, like you, don't agree with it."
Our "agreement" when we sign up for an ABT event is that we will abide by the rules, and we expect you to see that everyone does, including tournament staff.
