Backgame theory

Timing is critical in backgames.
If the opponent has crunched his board or will likely crunch it even if you chose to hit his blot(s), then go ahead and hit as this picks up more Gs and BGs.
If hitting means that the opponent will preserve timing by likely dancing and this could mean the difference between him crunching and not, then don't hit.
So do you hit in the position or not?
