A better approch?

Isn't this a little like saying "if you use an apple tree ax to chop down a cherry tree, the cherry tree really isn't chopped down"? :-)
If I have a method that computes the correct answer to a problem, why does it matter whether the method is conceptually correct? Any method of computing these probabilities is going to be based on certain assumptions which are wrong but, hopefully, don't make enough difference to have a material effect on the final answer.
* BTW, I have no idea if there is such a thing as an "apple tree ax" or a "cherry tree ax". It's just my feeble attempt to come up with an analogy on the spur of the moment. (I better go back to programming now.)
