I made your play for the exact same reasons. I was very much in gammon mode at this point in time.

My opponent rolled a 55, ending all of my hopes pretty abruptly. I'll admit that one thing I missed in my analysis is that 55 not only escapes and hits, it also completes white's board. However, as you point out 55 is a tremendous number anyway as white is winning the race so I would probably still make my play.
