After my ace play, in the worst reasonable case the opponent has three rolls left and I have two. Seems in most circumstances I will always want/need a checker on the five point to protect against the 5-5 (just as I'll want to protect against the 4-4, if possible). So, if I can protect against the 5-5 in both the one roll and two roll scenarios by playing 6/5 now, it seems prudent.
