In Response To: Rules (joe freedman)

In our rewrite of the US Rules two years ago this discussion went on for quite a while about whether "impossible" plays (something that can't happen in real backgammon with real dice rolls), should not be able to be condoned. We could never come up with a reasonable definition of what is "impossible". (Putting your self on the bar is impossible, but so is moving a 7 and a 4, the second probably should be condoneable, the first should not), so the rule was left as is.

My stance has always been that there are 26 places that a checker can be placed, and as long as the resulting POSITION is not impossible, (two checkers of different colors on a point, both people on the bar and closed out, etc), then the illegal play can stand.

Physically moving the checkers in a legal way is part of the skill of the game.
