I guess my definition of an 'impossible' position (for the purposes of this rule only) is one where there is no way to continue the game legally from this position. That's what I was shooting at, not just something that can't logically arise with legal plays.

Again, you can see the difficulty in attempting to codify such a rule, so the illegal plays rule was left as is.

I've seen all sorts of TDs let people off the hook on a variety of bizarre illegal plays. They are clearly using rule 1.1 to do so, not the illegal plays rule as written.
