"Sounds profound but does not mean anything."

The British are absolute masters in this, at least the educated elite. I have always wondered why. Is it the heritage of strict division into social classes and the public schools where pupils are taught the pronunciation and parlance of upper class, for the sake of social distinction, 'to keep up appearances', so to speak? The content is not as important as the way it is presented. Is it some sort of British humour as well?
