People like MCG and others are likely to be able to outplay the bots in complicated games IF they can get into those games enough times AND still have decent timing AND they get reasonable dice. And when it doesn't work, they, too, will get gammoned and backgammoned some times. That strategy works "in the long run" but not necessarily in the short run, and not necessarily even in the long run because the bots are not as bad as people say they are in these games.

Mike Corbett and others have spent a lot of time looking to find plays that the bots don't understand, and yes, they have come up with some, but they had to search long and hard and because they are saying the bot doesn't understand the play, we can't even be sure that the bot is wrong...how do you prove it other than playing a huge number of games against the bot and coming up with a winning percentage using your play instead of the bot's play?

Yes, you can set up a deep back game or mutual holding game with the bots and in 3 ply it will make many errors that the bot itself will reverse when you roll it out, and yes, these are plays that MCG and players of that level are more likely to get right. But there will also be plays the bot gets right that they might miss.

So if you want to use your strategy, you not only have to play the bots a lot of times, but you also have to be one of the best players in the world to truly have an edge. Most of those people are either playing poker or too busy doing other things.

For the rest of us, even in those big back games and difficult situations, I'll bet on the bots. I have set up such positions, and even posted an article on GV about a game where I had all 15 of my checkers back and found that I could not win that game anywhere near as much as the bots said I should, and it was because the bot knew how to play BOTH SIDES from that position a lot better than I could. Now, I'm no MCG, but I'm also not a novice player...so to beat the bots you would really have to find someone of extremely high skill spending a lot of time, and he would have to expend quite a bit of mental energy to win those games and play them better than the bots would play them.
