Not much difference, though, as 11/8 6/1 wins both on GNU. Not sure that I entirely understand why this is better than 16/11 6/3 or 11/3. ...
I'm not going to say these are the only reasons, but I think they matter here:
1. Starting and then completing the ace point will make it much safer later to attack the remaining back checker if he's forced to run with one man. You will have one more place to go for the "pass" part of "pick and pass", and there will be one fewer deep point where he can bounce back in and make trouble for you.
2. If nobody hits anybody, or the hits amount to very little, this game could turn into a close race. If that happens your bearoff board will already have a problem because of the gap on the 4 point, which the odds are good you will be unable to fill in after he vacates it. (By the time he runs, most of your checkers will already be home.) So you'll have to do the best you can given that handicap, and a smoothish distribution behind the anchor is going to be better than a stack on the 3. "Play A" is a step in the right direction.
