I attended Kitīs seminar some time back (was it at the Nordic Open?) where he said: "In early stages of a long match and in money game, if in doubt, always cube". In other words: "When the cube looks like trouble, always double".

My friend Ray told me that this is from the pre-bot era and in matches, itīs frequently better not to cube and just wait. You can still cube later and win more comfortably.
