Scoot... yes, that clever word substitution works as long as you understand that "scoot and down" is implied (e.g., that 32 played 24/21 13/11 is "scoot" (S) and 24/22 13/10 is "reverse scoot" (Z)), and that scoot does not apply to Up plays (e.g., 24/21 with the entire roll).
S refers to playing one checker up (even if there is no anchor, and even if there is only one back checker) and another checker down. When the back checker move doesn't actually break an anchor it can still be imagined as a Split -- and on those grounds I still call it a Split.
That said, if using Split when breaking an anchor and Scoot when not breaking an anchor helps you remember the broader usage of S, it seems like a fine idea. If other people tell me they find "Scoot" helpful, I'll mention it as an option in the tutorial.
