Perhaps I don't understand how varience reduction works or is calculated, but I think it is based on how well the bot understands the position or thinks that it understands. Therefore if you have a position that the bot doesn't understand, VR could be off and if you have on it thinks it understands, but actually doesn't then VR could be off.

Anyhow..I have seen quite a few short rollouts turn around when one play is quite a bit ahead. I strongly caution against short rollouts.
