How to count?

You're obviously going to play 2/off, so then you decide between having your last two checkers on 62 or 53. When you have two checkers left, it's better to have them 2 pips apart than 4, better to be 3 apart than 1 or 5 apart. I can't remember where I read this (which means it's probably from a Danny Kleinman book), but a rule of thumb is to place the two checkers as close to e (approx 2.718) as possible. It's extra geeky, but I don't forget it.
Any upcoming cube (here) doesn't matter, since almost certainly all that's important is getting the most number of rolls that bear off next time.
6/3 2/off
