When I have only two checkers left and am trying to figure out how to distribute them, here's my algorithm.

1. Put the two checkers on different points if you can. 2. Don't put a checker on the 6-point. 3. Put the checkers as far apart as possible.

These three steps have to be executed in that order. So for example if you're trying to decide between putting checkers on the 6-point and the 1-point versus putting checkers on the 5-point and the 2-point, rule 2 tells you not to put a checker on the 6-point, and so this decides the issue before you get to rule 3.
