Just memorize how often the last two checkers get be borne off as it is useful for match oriented cubes as well as money and also useful for settlements on big cubes.

Failing that, and wanting to be sure, just use the rule of 2 or 3. You strive to have the last two checkers be 2 or 3 pts apart, and failing that get as close to 2 or 3 and you can never make a mistake.
