My initial instinct was also that I'm too far behind in the race to step up to the 17-point. But it's true that White's race lead is somewhat illusory because of those buried checkers. Staying back is rather committal, because my chances of getting an immediate shot are not great, and if I stay back another turn or two then I'm going to have to bury more checkers and/or crack my board. Cube ownership also tips the balance slightly in favor of a race. It's a difficult choice, but I think I would play 20/17(2) 7/1.
