In Response To: Q for Nack re JG (Paul Weaver)

Thanks, Paul, for coming to my rescue.

Paul: One year they played each other in Monte Carlo. Grandell had to play double aces, I think in an early game position. Hugh Sconyers was watching the match and timed him. Grandell spent more than 30 minutes on this one play.

Coincidentally, Hugh called me this morning as I was reading your post! (At breakfast with the Wagners and Rubins, he was put on the spot for a Scrabble word with four Os, none of them consecutive. He was using me as a lifeline, and I gave him "locofoco," a type of friction match.) Yes, Hugh clocked Jerry's play at 32 minutes. It was the last year I attended Monte Carlo (1999?), Super Jackpot, Round 2, second game, fourth roll.

Garyo: was this gamesmanship? or did he really have a challenging play?

54S-21H-21$-11. [Traditional notation -- 54: 24/20 13/8, 21: 13/11 6/5*, 21: Bar/23 6/5, double 1s rolled.] A dozen or so plays were tried, most of them shuffled onto the board several times.

I found it exceedingly tough to play well against Jerry, but I also acknowledge frustration/impatience as my own failing. It is difficult for me to concentrate or enjoy myself in unclocked events.

Otherwise, I experienced Jerry as a very pleasant fellow. In post-game analysis, he was mostly interested in finding his own (few) errors, improving his game, objective discussion, etc. He seemed to truly love backgammon and was, and probably still is, an awesome player.

Paul: I spent some time with Jerry in Brazil in 1994 and 1995. One time when he flushed the toilet, he flushed $300 in cash literally down into the sewer.

Lol. I tried to visualize how that might happen but lost interest in the imagery. Jerry never struck me as the type to flush away equity.
