Makes sense. You have to keep your eye on the goal.

In the first position, white has cube access and your goal as blue is to try to keep white from reaching an efficient double position. If they do get to double, it should be a big market loss forfeiting all of their gammon potential of the position in exchange for more wins for you when they don't. The action play of 24/20 accomplishes this best since getting hit on the 11 is probably death if white has cube access, as is having white make the 5 point with your blot there or not.

In the second position, white has to play the game out to the end. So you are looking to retain long term wins, but also to limit gammon risk because white will actually gammon you here because he is not losing his market and cashing since there is lack of cube access.
