"Dwelling in the past can be deadly; backgammon decisions should only ever be about the road ahead."

This is a fine statement when it comes to your own past. But it is extremely useful to dwell in the past when it comes to your opponent. What tendencies have you observed in the past that you can take advantage of to make better decisions in the future? For example, if you have observed that your opponent is reluctant to attack, then you should be more willing to leave checkers where they are subject to attack in order to gain an advantage from the error they will make by not attacking. Ignoring your opponents established patterns of behavior and making plays like a bot does not maximize your winning chances. It only lowers your error rate. It is like being able to see one of your opponent's hole cards and then playing your own hand as if you never saw it.
