Timothy, the calculation is not simple as I made a couple of mistakes when doing it, but the problem is. A good rule of thumb in these type of positions: if there is a chance you will get a shot on your next turn and you have a choice between preserving a five-point board or preserving a 6 , it is generally correct to preserve the five-point board. What makes the calculation easy is the fact that being forced of the 18 point does not make you much more of an underdog than you would have been anyway, therefore you should make plays that do make a difference for other variations.
