More fun than a barrelful of 61s

This score (-1-3C) is like DMP, except that with a simple loss you can retain your free pass, and getting bg'ed loses the match. When the position at this score gets hairy, I sometimes refer to the situation as "backgammon go" for Opp and "backgammon save" for your side.
H (hitting loose 24/17*) gives White 21 return shots (all numbers that enter except for 32 31 21, which anchor) due to diversification -- her small numbers enter and her big numbers hit. Outboarded (and at this score), it is a bad time to get involved in a multi-blot slugfest. It wouldn't take such terrible luck to end up with five or more checkers on the 24pt. So, as much as the 24/23 ace can help strategically, I reject this greedy play tactically.
It's easy to be tempted by @ (anchoring while hitting on the 17pt). However, if you don't escape a 24pt checker soon, the position will probably detiorate quicky, and even if you do escape one checker and to complete safety, the two checkers that remain on the 24pt will be disconnected.
U (Up, 24/23 24/18) seems like the best chance (my choice for money as well). This gets two more checkers off the 24pt than the @ play. You'll dislike it if Opp makes the 8pt you could have had, but he's an underdog to do so, and at least your five back checkers are all connected.
