Oops, I meant that I knew for sure the answer only to #3 and #10. (I had mistakenly remembered the Holmes problem as being numbered #8.)
When I was in school in St. John's College School (Cambridge, England, age 11-12), I took a spelling test but I couldn't understand poor old Mr. Bevy, who had both a heavy accent and a breathing problem. For one of the words I wrote "neighsaw" because I couldn't guess that the professor was trying to say "nasal."
For #5, it certainly wasn't the fault of the test-creator but rather my lack of lateral thinking/imagination. By "type of position," I was thinking prime-vs-prime, holding game, race, etc. After you alerted me to take a second look, #5 was easy for me as you suspected it should have been.
