What is the wrong concept?

I don't have much to add to Rich and Matt's excellent analyses except to offer a somewhat related problem (first shown to me by Paul Weaver) with a solution that often shocks people. Mentally referencing this position helped me get the answer to your problem almost automatically.

The correct play with double 1s (by .014 according to 31k Snowie rollout, and by .025 according to 31k Gnu rollout) yields the same outer board distribution (10pt, 9pt and 8pt blots, plus 7pt) that playing 43D produces in your problem position (with the race deficit only 1 pip different), and White even has 12 hitting numbers (including 62 52) instead of only 8.

[This is one of the third-roll positions on which I lectured at the Nordic Open in 2003 and it will appear in my next book.]

Hope that helps,

Nack
