Note that Gnubg makes one play on 2- and 4-ply, and another on 3-ply. Between 8/3 6/5 and 8/2, I'd play 8/2 (the 3-ply play), because with the spare on the six point 5-1 plays better from the bar, and 5-1 and 5-2 play better if not on the bar. I think that outweighs 8/3 6/5, which may have merit in that if White leaves, Blue might attack or make the 4 point and have the 3 point to go with it.

I would not play 8/3 and slide 2/1. Nor would I play 6/1 with 2/1 or 3/2 or 8/7, all of which leave Blue with a weaker board than after 8/3 6/5 or 8/2, and with one less builder with which to attack the 4 point if White runs.
