There are 2 big differences between playing online and live: 1) The pip count is available online and this makes a HUGE difference.
2) There is much less stress at home behind the monitor compared to a live tournament. No distracting noises from kibitzers etc.
However, I agree with your point that everybody should be able to finde study material in their online matches. For me recording my live matches is also about monitoring how I do live without a pipcount and with all the stress associated with live play.
I believe that on average my ER is 0,5 lower online compared to live play.
