BACKGAMMON BOARD B605100
There are three boards featured on the H-S page mentioned - the grey one bears the best resemblance though the colours are not WSOB colours.
The grey one features the side troughs as employed on (amongst other brands) the WSOB boards: bear off sections on both sides, raised central part one side which features the Hector-Saxe brass / silver logo badge, dice & cube trough on other side.
This board has no provision for the doubling cube to have its own (3) locations. However if you look closely at the black board you will see there there are 3 faux leather covered holes on the centre bar for locating the cube during play. Michel Saxe would I sure do this to order on a board.
The faux leather is of good quality - it's not slippy, shiny and cold to touch but is a good representation of natural leather. The faux leather on WSOB boards are black. This gives the impression of a very serious board on which you can expect to play a hard match. Partouche branded boards have a pinky / red faux leather which (IMHO) makes them look sissy. Brown faux leather works well.
Felt playing surface with silk screen printed points. The points do not wear off with use though the felt on H-S boards does roughen up with use. H-S have a wide range of felts (mattes en français.)
The overall dimensions of the boards are 75cms x 55cms x 4cms. Again this makes it a serious modern day backgammon board.
The checkers are excellent. The weight of them is very much in keeping with the size and tone of the set. They are not all one pure colour; they feature slight swirls which make them more attractive without disturbing ones eyes. H-S have a wide range of colours to choose from. You get a little carry bag to put the checkers, dice, cube and cups into.
H-S also make a dimpled checker. These are slightly too light to be considered as serious as the board is; as such (I think) they are not in keeping with a set of this size.
H-S dice cups (goblets en français) are good. They are rectangular; a shape that does work well. Lipped; yes. 13mm dice suit best.
How practical is this as a travelling players’ board? It is not an attaché case style board so it is not. However this feature does make it a better board to play on.
As such I would recommend these sets for purchase by any serious backgammon club that has on-site board storage facility or to any T.D. that wishes (and has the investment capacity) to provide boards for his/her players. It’s also easier to transport lots of these flat-boards as opposed to transporting lots of attaché case sets. H-S will make branded mattes (playing surfaces) to order.
