There will be an attack and it is better and easier to attack the 5 point than the 2 point. If the point is made a better structure results. Also the 5 point is more easily reached from the midpoint. On a loose hit for example you will usually be able to add an attacker from the midpoint within direct range of the slot when attacking the 5 point but usually not when attacking the 2 point.

Do you have Kit Woolsey's Backgammon Encyclopedia? It will help with a lot of the questions you are asking.
