Bart Brooks flashcards

Interestingly, Brooks classes the following 55s as ND/T:
65R-55A-F-C
Right, that case is the most obvious ND, because the taker doesn't even have a blot in Opp's inner board to contend with (just the one on the roof which is common to all the positions.)
51S-55A-F-C
41S-55A-F-C
21S-55A-F-CIn order, the best for the taker (and worst for the guy who shouldn't double) are 51S... 21S... 41S..., because of the greater exposure of the outer board blot (similar to the 51R..., 62S..., 64S... progression -- see previous post.)
The above three ND's fall into line with my statement, "And if the blot is in Opp's inner board instead of her outer board, logically the take is easier still (and increasingly so as you go in the other direction: 20pt, 21pt, and finally 23pt -- hardest to attack), with the culminating ones being ND's."
Btw, 51S-55A-F-C is the same as 52S-55A-2-C.
The only difference between the 54S and 51S cases is the remaining checker on the 5pnt and 2pnt respectively. Why should the deeper (potential) anchor be worse for black here? Maybe because if black points with 42,22 etc, he makes a great point and hits?
Not really. You're right about the higher potential anchor being better for White, but she might never anchor (or she might get hit and end up making a different anchor). In blitz situations, the value of the board points are treated more equally than in other types of games.
The important factor is the vulnerability of blot(s). The attacker (who has five checkers on his midpoint) is more likely to roll an 8 or 9 (to hit, and to subequently cover a hit) than an 11, plus he is more likely to roll a combination that hits and brings down a new direct cover number -- something like 13 vs 9 vs 3 numbers respectively for 5pt vs 4pt vs 2pt blot (though there are 6 additional numbers that hit on the 2pt and bring down a new indirect cover that also bears on the 5pt/4pt.) I suggest counting yourself: it's a good exercise to hone your intuition.
